Here's a trio of knives and some extra goodies I finished for three friends who run an organization in Alaska that I've worked with. They're pretty fantastic and inspiring people who also do a lot of hunting and fishing together, so I wanted them each to have a special knife and story to match. I also included a few extra things, including some leather pocket strops made from the cutoffs of the handles, some molded leather lighter cases (never leave home without one or ten of those in AK!) and three knife/tool belt loop extensions. You hang your knife from this and then thread the extension through your belt, which lowers how far down the knife hangs. I find them especially useful when wearing a backpack hip belt or in winter with bulky clothing. It can be positioned over a belt loop on your pants, thus keeping it from sliding around. They also have a thinner piece of leather on the face which can accept pockets clips on folding knives and such. They're handy for a few more things, but you get the idea.
All three handles feature curly maple from the same block. They're all fitted with brass bolsters (one with a piened finish) and whitetail antler butt caps. They're rounded out with a mix of brass, copper, and antler spacers, stacked birch bark, leather, and walnut burl. All three have an apple seed handle profile with slightly flared butt cap. They have tight fitting pinned and mortised handle components secured with West System G/flex epoxy. In addition, the larger blades have a retaining pin through a notch in the tang while the short knife has a threaded tang end with hidden nut. The larger blades are Moras (3.9" carbon, 4.5" stainless steel) while the smaller is a Polar blade made in collaboration by Brisa and Lauri (3" carbon). I hand sanded the two carbon blades and gave them a dirty patina by spiral wrapping them with strips of paper towel soaked in vinegar. All are finished with Danish oil and wax and are paired with wet molded leather dangler sheaths with wooden inner sheaths.
You can see a little behind-the-scenes look at the build process for one of these HERE. Thanks for looking!
