New Puukko In the Works

I have one blade left that I purchased from Jamiah Mahoney at the 2021 Winter Camping Symposium waiting to be turned into a finished knife. I've wanted to build this style of knife for a long time but couldn't wrap my head around some of the details. Ignorance aside, I dove in headlong this week and have gotten to a pretty decent place. The knife itself is only finished to 120 grit belt while the lower sheath is still a clunky block. Quite a ways to go yet, including the daunting task of carving and dyeing the antler components. Materials include: brass, birch bark, stabilized walnut, and whitetail deer antler (I'm fresh outta caribou antler ).

Absolutely stunning! If you gave me a week and all the tools I could probably turn a file into a better shiv, but that is the extent of my abilities. Very cool to see what someone can do at home with skill and patience. Thanks for sharing.

I’m just a beginner in terms of this style of sheath, including the decorative work on the antler. I went simple this time ‘round and basically kolrosed it (simple incised lines) as opposed to the more traditional v-cuts made from both directions. I don’t have the skill or blade control yet. Its a long ways from where I’d like to be, but ya gotta start somewhere.

I finally got this one across the finish line. This build had a steep learning curve, and I think I fell off halfway up. But finished it is. The blade was made by Jamiah Mahoney at Subtle Forge and paired with some custom stabilized walnut burl, birch bark spacers, hammered brass bolster/cap, and whitetail deer antler. I didn’t have any caribou antler to do a proper job of it, but this antler shed was very dense nearly clear through. I turned the walnut belt loop bead on my drill press from a handle cutoff. The leather has been hot waxed with a beeswax/paraffin mixture. My shop apron makes a decent photo prop, too.

Umm... wow? That's gorgeous, man. I have a similar blade ("handled" by Paige May) but I really like the little details you put into your project. Beautiful!

He actually provided the birch bark on this build. I ordered a puukko from him that he'll deliver at the WCS in a few weeks. Can't wait to see what I bought. 😎

That's really cool! I'd like to meet some of the "local" cast of characters but the WCS always seems to land on my wedding anniversary. No camping for the wife, so...
