  • Dandy Little Gamles Camp Axe

I got the chance to refurb this dandy 2 1/4 lb Gambles Artisan camp axe for a friend of mine. It's hung on a hand carved 26" hickory haft crested with milk paint. It's doubled wedged with cherry and cocobolo. I hand filed and sanded new 25 degree convex bevels and made a new mask for it. This workhorse was hard to let go.

I can see what you mean. It has that great balance of character and functionality and a bit of elegance. Your work is so good -- I'm just repeating myself.

That's what I was aiming for...glad I at least got in the ballpark! The milk paint not only adds a bit of character, but I've found it adds just the right amount of texture to give a positive grip without going overboard...as long as I don't over sand the paint between coats.
