  • Wood stove ovens and baking setups

I'm looking for something to bake with while car camping with my nieces and nephews in the winter. They love cinnamon rolls and cookies, etc. Please share your wood stove oven/baking setups!

    Thanks!

Over the years, I have tried several methods. My current "go to" baking system is a Four Dog reflector oven mounted on the side of the stove. One suggestion for reflector oven baking is to make sure the bottom of the oven is as high as possible on the side of the stove. The lower it mounts on the side of the stove, the less heat for browning the bottoms of whatever you are cooking. Click image for larger version

The other "somewhat successful" series of experiments involved making lightweight, collapsible box type ovens which sit on top off the stove. Advantages are that they are great for large baking sheets and the ability to put a thermometer in the top to measure temperatures. If the temp gets too high, simply move the top to create an opening allowing the heat to dissipate. The main disadvantage is that the surface of the stove is not accessible for other pots and pans.

I want to experiment with the Coleman camp oven. First mod will be a insulating jacket for it to hold the heat in.
But am curious on ideas out there

The Bemco backpacker’s oven is pretty much the gold standard of stove top ovens. Available in a couple of sizes, I think we have the larger of the two but I still had to make my own mini cookie sheets to fit the shelves. Very good results for all the usual baked goods. We have found that using it without the heat deflector shelf (intended for using with a gas burner) gives much better results.

Heavy Duty's photo and idea is CLASSIC... and fun to think about. I have been trending towards more base camp set ups for years, and all seasons. Tried and True and CHEAP... the Coleman fold and go bake oven. We use it at almost every meal in cool to cold weather outings, sometimes as nothing more than a cook and hold box while other parts of the menu finish cooking.

Has anyone attempted to use the typical Outback Oven “hood” on a kni-co stove top?

im assuming the deflector would sit directly and the hood could cover and rest directly on the stove surface?

would be super light and convenient as we already own the UL Outback Oven.

                thanks,

Yes, you need to add a spacer under your pan to stop the hood from touching. It was a while ago and first attempt had the hood touching, didn’t work well and the hood scorched. Adding the spacer improved cooking as I think the hot air flowing under the edge of the hood and out the top gave more even heating.
gave up on it as I didn’t like having to lift off the hood, then take the pan lid off. Seemed to stall the baking process.
we’ve now switched to the Bemco.

This look a lot like it was AI generated.

Curious, how should these forums handle AI generated content? My inclination is people come here to share their experiences with others and learn from other's experiences. It doesn't seem like AI generated content is a good fit to me but I would love to hear what others have to say.

Yeah, it does have that AI feeling. Plus it's Mr. Suarez's first post? Seems suspect.

I 'm in the "strong moderation keeps an online forum sane" camp, so I'm in favor of deleting post from AI/forum bots.

Yea I have no idea who that is, and it does seem suspicious. He's banned. thanks. They hide links in their post for spam.
