  • Small Solo Hot Tent a.k.a. The Pip Squeak

Sharing a tent with my usual travelling companions is likely out of the question this season so thought I’d better get my solo hot tent finished. I bought about the cheapest pyramid tent I could find on eBay, $75 including a mesh inner. It has a door either side which could be useful. 16” walls and snow flaps open up the headroom and give it the useable space of a much bigger mid, with useable space right to the walls. I added some may guy points up the sides and sewed buckles at the bottom of the zippers to help take some of the strain. This tent came with a #5 zipper, I think I would go with a #8 if making my own. The small solo stove fits great, lots of room inside. It’s 8.5ft long by 7ft wide at the middle. I can crank it up to 5.5ft high with the telescopic painter’s pole. Hope to give it a try soon. It was 16 deg C here today so I didn’t try firing up the stove. Click image for larger version

      Looks great BV! Well done!
They're forecasting -14 for you on Thursday night, so maybe winter will be starting soon ..... really.

        Great idea!
Did you add the sidewalls (darker material)?
        Thanks for sharing this.

Yes, they’re some 30” wide strips of HyperD 1.6. I have a roll of the stuff and it seems to get used for everything where I need a durable lightweight fabric. Adding the walls gives you the living space of a much larger tent without the bigger footprint. I’m hoping I can find some nice sheltered spots back in the trees to tuck in to.
another plus is that if it does snow heavily you don’t get snow build up on the fly like you do with a tipi.
