  • DIY Waxed Canvas Choppers

Been toying with this simple mitten pattern since fall and made this pair of fleece lined, waxed canvas choppers with buckskin palms and gauntlets. I can swap out a few different types of liners, including gloves and/or mitts, but these hand knitted specimens are pretty classy and effective. Had them on several trips and really like them. Been a bit warm here of late, though...wish it would get back to winter.

Beautiful work! Did you make your own pattern or work off an established one? I've made similar overmitts out of deerskin and then use various mittens and/or gloves inside. Like yours, it allows for me to change out the inner pair when they get wet.

That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well.

I started with a basic 3 piece I found online then scaled it up, added gauntlets, refined the fit, etc.

I actually made two pair. The pattern for one of them came from the Conover book. The other came from a craft book we found in a house we bought back in the late 1970s. The couple we got it from were back-to-the-land folks so we found a lot of DIY books. It's amazing how much we've used them over the years.

That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well.
