  • Who's firing up their woodstoves

So who is planning some early fall camping as the temps begin to drop out and the snow is hitting the hills at least here
With Thanksgiving long weekend coming up in the Great white North I'll be out with the hot tent getting my nature fix. Hoping to see some morning frost maybe a flake or two.
Pic is from last yrs outing

Oh I hope to get my winter camping toys out soon. I have a problem with too many hobbies so, when winter camping season finally arrives it's a mad dash to get things ready. I usually do a thanksgiving winter camping trip to my moms house, my nieces and nephews come over, we literally hang out in the tent with the wood stove although not much camping gets done but at least my family gets to experience the wood stove.

btw. that's an awesome pic. Mountains, hot tent and a square body.

Sadly, the temps are still in the upper 70’s to low 80’s here, so no stove yet.

All cleaned up and ready to burn. Grouse hunting this weekend, so I will fire one of the stoves up. Here in Minnesota we have a few weeks until its really cold enough to fire them up.

I have an outing coming up in mid-October. I should take my new-to-me woodstove and practice setting it up and firing it a couple times. Don't want to have to learn something the hard way in the middle of January in a storm.

            Wise choice right there.
I see any excuse to fire the stove up while out in Nature is always a good learning experience and them experience's has made me make changes/adapt

I have cooked and eaten my breakfast on a wood burner every day all summer. Building stoves and tarp shelters is a hobby of mine. I have discovered little improvements that make my outfit better. I guess I am a slow learner but I enjoy finding ways to make it simpler and more comfortable. My tarp is pegged on each corner, my chimney is centre pole, 2 poles in the corner keep the tarp just above my head but this time l have the corner tied outside up to an overhead tree. so no corner inside poles. The sides of the tarp are all propped open in warm, no wind or all tight to the ground. I sit in a sleeping pad chair so my back stays warm. My shoes are off with my feet on them, nice and warm, one on each side of my coffee can stove. For summer my stove was only 5” high. I just made a new one 7.5” high with all my latest improvements. I like the side chimney port to be as low on the stove as possible so I can get the most possible heat for my cooking surface. I got it to low this time and smoke leaked and I had to cut the port opening 1/2” higher.

That is awesome chimpac. Nothing makes for good learning than just doing and tweaking to get the best personal performance as everyone has differing needs, so it is cool when one takes things in their own direction.
Love to see some pics of your latest summer setup

                  Some photos
This an 8’x10’ tarp. It is a tight fit for 2 people. The stove 2” taller than my summer stove but is pretty frosty on the morning now. There is no reason to go so minimum unless it’s something you have to carry it on your back. The same tarp, vertical tin can stove idea works for any size tarp or stove.
Good for a party, the old blue tarp 16’x18’. It has 3 stoves.

When it gets colder and especially when the wind blows it greatly adds to comfort if the outside edge of the tarp is air tight to the ground. The easiest way is to move tie points at the corners in from the edge 10” or 12”. Another way is to use a strip of Velcro on the edge to attach a tarp full floor or a piece of tarp to the edge.
One more way is to use 2” aluminum nails that come with a plastic washer. I just pull the tarp edge tight from the middle and nail the tarp tight to the ground. 2 nails per side might be all I need.

Still way too warm here in Ohio (70-80) everyday. I am more than ready to fire it up - just have to wait a little bit longer.

This weekends setup of the Hammock hot tent . Was warmer than they said. Had some rain plus sun with some 4x4 fun tossed in . Sure is nice just to fire the wood stove up before bed and in the morning just to take the chill dampness off.
