  • Luxuries on winter trips

Hello all, just wondering what sort of luxuries you might bring on winter trips. Stuff that is not essential but make the trip just a little more memorable. I always bring a flask of scotch, but that is for all the seasons. For winter I bring a good battery pack for some warm-white string LEDs that really make the tent livable at night.

    Thanks much.

My luxury item has always to bring a small radio, love listening to it. I also bring a small folding chair that I would consider more essential than a luxury, but, it sure makes feeding the stove a lot more comfortable.

For me, a luxury when pulling a sled would be a chair or ice fishing gear.

Car camping would be cots, a small folding table, more elaborate meals.

When I can use my toboggan (which is a shortie 5’ SnowWalker from BRS) some luxury items I take are my very compact 4lb cot, two Therma-a-Rest compressible pillows, my 1.5lb camp chair with Climashield underquilt, GSI coffee grinder for fresh grounds, three foil smoker pans to make a stove top baking oven, an UCO candle lantern, and sometimes some spoon carving blanks and tools..

Oh, and quite often a sampling of my favorite hard ciders. That’s my real treat stove-side.

Hmm, luxury? Mine is the opportunity to experience nature in all it's winter glory.
That and a extra battery pack to power my phone so I can listen to audio-books while in camp.

All these suggestions sound great. I usually bring a Crazy Creek chair that can double as a sleeping pad. I always try to find a way to bring a chair because that is borderline essential/luxury for me.

I sometimes bring a small bluetooth speaker to play some audiobooks/stories after the sun has gone down. Don't worry, I won't be blasting any ACDC anytime soon.

Hard ciders is a good idea. Do you heat them up over the stove at all?

I either bury them in the snow or keep them in a little soft sided cooler (sometimes with a hand warmer). I really like the smaller slim cans the Strongbow and others sell. But I do like picking up a few cans of local stuff, too. The Duluth area seems to have a lot of options. 😎

A pair of insulated slip on shoes for use in the tent only.

I've got to add these GooseFeet Gear socks. Very light weight and compactable, so might not be considered a luxury, but the cost of them is! I won't go on another cold weather trip without them, highly recommend them.
