  • What good winter books out there?

I’m flying soon to Norway and wanted to bring a good book with me. Some outdoor sites have a “What are you reading?” Thread.
I quickly grabbed Jack London short stories.
The librarian gave me The Life of Roald Amundsen.
I recently finished The Call of the Wild.

You've already got Jack London, so you've got most of my recommendation.

"Lure of the Labrador Wild" is a good read.

Not necessarily a winter book, but "Deep Survival" is a good read that really gets into the psychology of survivors.

    "Endurance" is about Shakleton's survival

Dangerous River by R.M Patterson is my favorite winter read. The first half is an excellent summer adventure, but the last half is a great winter adventure.
The Arctic Forests by Michael H. Mason is a great read about winter travel: https://www.abebooks.com/book-search...son-michael-h/
Paradise Below Zero is on my wish list: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0816636826...v_ov_lig_dp_it
Sorry could not figure out how to do more than one link?
Buy a cheap copy of Dangerous River : Adventure on the... book by R.M. Patterson. R.M. Patterson left London in the winter of 1927 and headed out prospecting in the treacherous and beautiful Nahanni River in Canada's Northwest Territories. Though... Free Shipping on all orders over $15.

True North and Northern Nurse by Elliot Merrick are two I'd suggest. Also The Cruelest Miles by Gay And Laney Salisbury about the race to get diphtheria serum out to Nome Alaska that became the Iditarod race is great.

Winterdance by Gary Paulson - good story about the author deciding one day to run the Iditarod and all the trials he went through.
Cache Lake Country by John Rowlands - not necessarily a winter book, but still a great early 1900's how-to book on all season camping

I’ll second True North and Paradise Below Zero. Also by Merrick, The Long Crossing.

Lure of the Labrador Wild for sure. I read it while vacationing in the Rockies in the summer of 2019, it made me wish for winter.

im currently enjoying books by author/adventurer Adam Shoalts. I think any of his books will do you well. Added bonus, he’s Canadian!

That looks like a real fun museum to go through. How was the temperatures?

Looking forward reading some of the these! Lure of the Labrador Wild is fantastic.

I enjoyed Winterworld: The Ingenuity of Animal Survival by Bernd Heinrich (nonfiction, wonderfully accessibly and well-written on how animals adapt for winter), Ordinary Wolves (Seth Kantner, fiction that draws on his life homesteading in NW Alaska), Arctic Dreams (Barry Lopez, nonfiction essays that weave together science, history, author's travels...dense but good enough for a national book award), The Reindeer People (Piers Vitebsky, nonfiction, first person ethnography of his travels with the Eveny, an indigenous people in Siberia), The Tenderness of Wolves (Stef Penney, fiction on the Hudson Bay Company--most set in the winter).

Had to double check that I didn't write that post. "Deep Survival" is one of my favorite books.
