Care for babiche snowshoes question

I have a pair of traditional babiche snowshoes and during the session I manged a get sand ground into them. (It's not my proudest achievement.) Any tricks out there for cleaning the snowshoes before I varnish them?

Use a stiff bristle brush, maybe a very fine grit sandpaper. Go easy, less is more when cleaning natural sinew.
