  • Make at home, freeze, heat up in tent Recipies

One recipe that I enjoy making at home and then wrapping in aluminum foil to be heated up over the wood stove is Pasta Frettata. When I make it I add a bit more noodles to give it some structure. But it packs well, is really filling especially if you add bacon, and all you have to do is toss it on top of the wood stove.

I know a lot of people will make chili ahead of time and freeze it. Are there any other recipes that you all do for easy meals at camp?

I usually make a white chicken chili at home. I divide it into quart bags (two cups per person) then freeze it.
Here is the recipe I use. I will use 2 cans of jalapenos instead of green chilis.

I do this with bacon, I cook my bacon, wrap in foil portioned out for each day. No grease spatter on the tent. I make a lot of bannock.

        Perogies!
Couple strips of bacon broken up and some sour cream (hopefully not frozen). Throw em in a frying pan or aluminum pie plate with some butter and heat em up.

          MRaske,
Just letting you know that I made this recipe for winter camping this last weekend and it was perfect. Easy to make beforehand, and just thaw and eat once at camp. Even my wife was impressed. Perfect. I'll be keeping this one for future camping trips.

A few of my favorites are venison, or beef stew, chicken riggies, red beans and rice, with ham and or sausage, and beef, or venison straugonof. All topped with a liberal chunk of butter just before serving, of course. 😁

Perogies are something I like a lot, but rarely have and I don't know why. For some reason I just don't seem think of them, but I need to try to keep them in mind. I love them cooked with sliced onion and butter. The bacon is a nice touch too, thanks.

                Love the Perogies idea!

I don't generally cook much in my tent, usually we prefer to cook outside, next to or on a fire- but I do like to make coffee and occasionally, breakfast, in the tent.
A hit with the crew last trip was breakfast burritos- I pre-made 3, wrapped in tin foil, and warmed up on the morning fire, while heating water for coffee.
Basically just a tortilla, cooked Chorizo sausage (from El Burrito Mercado in St. Paul), scrambled eggs, cheese and some salsa, and a couple of pickled jalapeños in each one- great, warm breakfast with lots of protein to start the day!

Another suggestion (I warm these in foil either on a fire grate or cast iron skillet, but your tent stovetop would work well, too) is Pasties from Zup's in Ely/Babbitt/or Silver Bay, MN, with some packet gravy- makes an amazing, filling, and easy to prepare dinner. https://zups.com/products-page/fresh...style-pasties/
Everyone I've ever introduced to Pasties loves them, and usually stops at Zups on the way home to buy more.

Call me what you will but I can't get away from my Dennies style breakfasts even when among the wilderness.

I'm the exact opposite, I'll eat a quick breakfast and lunch on the trail, But dinners are pretty involved, after all once camp is set up and it's getting dark I've got nothing but time to kill before bed.
A favourite is Chicken fried rice- 2 boneless chicken breasts (cubed and fried in olive oil at home), 2 cups parboiled rice, one small grated onion, 1/4 red or yellow pepper, 1/2 cup precooked canned or frozen corn, an egg,2 oz olive oil and 2oz of soya sauce (cooking type).
make the rice according to instructions, While it's cooking, in a large frypan, add the olive oil, and egg, scramble the egg into small pieces, add the pepper, onion, corn, chicken, and 1 oz soya and mix well while heating, add the rice and the last of the soya and mix again, heat until any liquid is gone. takes about 1/2 hour
serves 2 as a full meal, or 4 as a side.
